On Thursday, November 20, 2025, out of an intense growing concern for the movement of the president and his administration to attack Argentina amid also threats of bombing both Mexico and Colombia, and multiple other factors affecting my soul, I decided to write to both of our senators from California.
У четвер, 20 листопада 2025 року, через глибоку зростаючу стурбованість рухами президента та його адміністрації щодо можливої атаки на Аргентину, а також загрози бомбардування Мексики та Колумбії, а також через численні інші фактори, що впливають на мою душу, я вирішив написати обом нашим сенаторам від Каліфорнії.
The letter below to Senator Schiff is identical to the one I sent to Senator Padilla, except with the letter to Senator Schiff, I added a last paragraph where I expressed my gratitude for his years of standing up to this Administration’s spiraling actions of division and harm towards multiple groups within our country, and I expressed my concern for the senator’s physical safety, because of the rising rhetoric of revenge and violence.

Does the president have the power without Senate approval to attack Venezuela, and bomb Mexico and Colombia? Has the Senate already capitulated this power to him? I am greatly alarmed by what is actually playing out and also being threatened. Will the Senate do anything to stop these aggressions? If this Administration gets away with these military excursions, then what will they not do abroad and within our own borders? Why doesn’t the Senate exert their own power for the good of our nation and people?
Чи має президент повноваження без схвалення Сенату атакувати Венесуелу та бомбити Мексику і Колумбію? Чи вже Сенат передав йому цю владу? Я дуже занепокоєний тим, що насправді відбувається і що мені загрожує. Чи робитиме Сенат щось, щоб зупинити ці агресії? Якщо ця адміністрація відверто вдасться до цих військових експедицій, то що вони не будуть робити за кордоном та в межах нашої власної країни? Чому Сенат не застосовує свої повноваження на благо нашої нації та народу?
Weren’t the attacks on the education of our children, and the health care of millions and food for the hungry among us, and the overt and ever-increasing attacks on the essential integrity of our justice system, and the destruction of the East Wing, not enough to generate concern? Weren’t the basic indifference to the destruction of Gaza and the true plight of the Palestinians, and now the hope for a measure of self-determination by the Palestinians being crushed by being treated merely as an inconvenient part of a potentially profitable real estate deal, and the ever ongoing betrayal of Ukraine – are these not enough to generate a true concern to evaluate and debate and take cautionary action within the Senate’s power against the current military and international moves of the president? Doesn’t the Senate have a moral and constitutional mandate to do what is best for the American people?
Хіба атаки на освіту наших дітей, охорону здоров’я мільйонів та забезпечення їжею голодних серед нас, а також відкриті та все зростаючі напади на основну цілісність нашої системи правосуддя та руйнування Східного крила не були достатніми, щоб викликати занепокоєння? Хіба базова байдужість до руйнування Гази та реального становища палестинців, а тепер надія на певну міру самовизначення палестинців, яка розтоптується лише через те, що їх розглядають як незручну частину потенційно прибуткової нерухомості, та постійне зрада України — хіба це не достатньо, щоб викликати справжнє занепокоєння, щоб оцінити, обговорити та вжити запобіжних заходів у межах повноважень Сенату проти поточних військових та міжнародних кроків президента? Хіба Сенат не має морального та конституційного мандату робити те, що найкраще для американського народу?
Please do everything you can to save what is good and beneficial and right for our country and the various peoples of our great nation – for the education of our children and affordable health care for all, for the feeding of those hungry and in need of food, and for freedom of speech and justice and equality of rights and due process for all before the law. These things are the foundation and guarantee of the true greatness of our nation.
Будь ласка, зробіть усе можливе, щоб зберегти те, що добре, корисно та правильне для нашої країни та різних народів нашої великої нації — для освіти наших дітей і доступної медичної допомоги для всіх, для годування тих, хто голодний і потребує їжі, та для свободи слова, справедливості і рівності прав і належного процесу для всіх перед законом. Ці речі є фундаментом і гарантією справжньої величі нашої нації.
My father was a WWII veteran, my mother was an immigrant, and I have ten grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Please fight to honor the sacrifice of my father, and the life-long work and dutiful love of my mother in raising six children, and for the future of my grandchildren and great-grandchild and their constitutional and God-given rights to live and prosper in a county of rightness, justice, equality, and freedom.
Мій батько був ветераном Другої світової війни, моя мати була іммігранткою, і у мене десять онуків та одна правнучка. Будь ласка, боріться, щоб вшанувати жертви мого батька, а також багаторічну працю та віддану любов моєї матері у вихованні шести дітей, і заради майбутнього моїх онуків та правнучки, а також їхніх конституційних та даних Богом прав жити і процвітати в країні правильності, справедливості, рівності та свободи.
Thank you for what you, and the members of both parties of goodwill, integrity, and love of country, are doing to save our beloved nation and democracy. Thank you also for your attention to this letter.

I also thank the Lord for your courage, intelligence, and integrity in everything you have already done to stand against the president and his past and now current efforts to corrupt and defy the constitutional structure of our government, and to destroy the people’s essential confidence in the working of our government – all planned and implemented to destroy our democracy and illegitimately maintain his place in power. I pray for your continued fight for our nation and now also for your safety, for we truly do live in troubled and potentially dangerous times.
Я також дякую Господу за вашу мужність, розум і чесність у всьому, що ви вже зробили, щоб виступати проти президента та його минулих і теперішніх спроб спотворити та зневажати конституційний устрій нашого уряду, а також підірвати основну довіру народу до роботи нашого уряду — усе це було заплановано і реалізовано для руйнування нашої демократії та незаконного збереження його влади. Considering what I had just written to our Senators for California, and in preparation to write the letter below to Maxim and Alena, expressing my concerns for them with the increased missile and drone attacks on Kyiv with their and our celebration of Thanksgiving coming next week, I reread a number of times my posting of December 12, 2024, where I posted about the poignant email letter I had received on December 8, 2024, from Alena, describing their celebration last year and how she wondered how their celebration of Thanksgiving in Kiev would be in 2025.
Беручи до уваги те, що я щойно писав нашим сенаторам за Каліфорнію, і готуючись написати лист нижче Максимові та Алені, виражаючи мої занепокоєння щодо збільшення атак ракетами та дронами на Київ у контексті їхнього та нашого святкування Дня подяки наступного тижня, я кілька разів перечитував моє повідомлення від 12 грудня 2024 року, де я писав про зворушливий електронний лист, який отримав 8 грудня 2024 року від Алени, у якому вона описувала своє святкування минулого року та замислювалася, яким буде їхнє святкування Дня подяки у Києві в 2025 році.
Also, in preparation of writing the letter, I also reread my posting of October 16 of this year – already seems a lifetime ago – in which Maxim told me they live on the 11th floor of their apartment building where they can see the drones in the distance flying into the city.
Також, готуючись до написання листа, я ще раз перечитав своє повідомлення від 16 жовтня цього року — здається, це було вже цілу вічність тому — у якому Максим розповів мені, що вони живуть на 11-му поверсі своєї багатоповерхівки, звідки можна бачити дрони, що летять у місто вдалині.
And I also reread my posting of March 29, 2025, where I wrote of the appalling events during President Zelensky’s meeting at the White House at the end of February, and about Maxims trip to Los Angeles and our meeting together on March 3. We had gathered at my home before a fire in the fireplace and Maxim had spoken with sadness about the war.
І я також перечитав моє повідомлення від 29 березня 2025 року, де я писав про жахливі події під час зустрічі президента Зеленського в Білому домі наприкінці лютого, а також про поїздку Максима до Лос-Анджелеса та нашу зустріч 3 березня. Ми зібралися у моєму будинку біля каміна, і Максим сумно говорив про війну.
I also reread a number of times my posting of April 8, 2024, where I spoke of the death of my infant son and he of his concern for his son, now a young man. Below are excerpts from that posting which I think spoke volumes of what was happening in Ukraine.
Я також неодноразово перечитував свій пост від 8 квітня 2024 року, де я говорив про смерть свого немовляти, а він – про тривогу за свого сина, який зараз уже молодий чоловік. Нижче наведено уривки з того посту, які, на мою думку, багато говорять про те, що відбувалося в Україні.
“Our conversation was quiet, honest and intimate as Maxim shared the issues affecting and even oppressing him about the war and his concern for his family. He spoke of Alexei, his son, who he said had graduated from an electrical engineering college. He showed me a photo of Alexei together with one of his friends at the graduation ceremony (the type of photo a father carries of his children, a reflection of his heart, that he touches and contemplates upon at times and shows his friends). He added that Alexei had found a job, a good job, but that the company did not always have enough contracts coming in to keep all their employees busy every day. This, of course, because of the war.”
Наша розмова була тихою, чесною та інтимною, коли Максим ділився проблемами, що його торкалися і навіть пригнічували через війну, а також своєю турботою про родину. Він розповідав про Алексія, свого сина, який, за його словами, закінчив коледж з електротехніки. Він показав мені фото Алексія разом з одним із друзів на церемонії вручення дипломів (той тип фотографії, який батько носить зі своїми дітьми, відображення його серця, до якого він іноді торкається і роздумує, і показує друзям). Він додав, що Алексій знайшов роботу, хорошу роботу, але компанія не завжди мала достатньо контрактів, щоб зайняти всіх працівників щодня. Звісно, це через війну.
“Maxim then said his son, like many young people, seems to live without hope of ever having a normal life. When he said this, I just gently nodded my head and realized how beautiful the thought of a normal life must be for those without it. For normal life has ended for many Ukrainians, if not all, a normal life not possible within a war of random and frequent missile and drone strikes. Nor is it possible with the mounting casualties of their military defending the nation – the men and women, the family, friends and neighbors and fellow citizens. And within the nation, all live to some extent with death hanging over their lives and the lives of those they love and care for and interact with, all under the threat of injury or catastrophic damage as long as the war lasts. Ukraine is not now a place of normal living for anyone.”
Максим тоді сказав, що його син, як і багато молодих людей, здається, живе без надії коли-небудь мати нормальне життя. Коли він це сказав, я просто тихо кивнув головою і зрозумів, як прекрасна думка про нормальне життя для тих, хто його не має. Адже нормальне життя для багатьох українців, якщо не для всіх, закінчилося, нормальне життя неможливе під час війни з випадковими та частими ракетними і дроновими обстрілами. Воно також неможливе з огляду на зростаючі втрати їхньої армії, що захищає націю – чоловіків і жінок, сім’ю, друзів, сусідів та співгромадян. І в межах країни всі певною мірою живуть з відчуттям смерті, що нависає над їхнім життям та життям тих, кого вони люблять, опікуються ними та взаємодіють із ними, усі знаходяться під загрозою поранення або катастрофічних руйнувань доти, доки триває війна. Україна зараз не є місцем нормального життя для будь-кого.

The video shocked many but clearly illustrated his golden vision for Gaza and himself.

I reread again a few times my posting of December 12, 2024, where, Alena, I posted your e-mail message of December 8, 2024, where you described your family’s celebration of Thanksgiving in the American style since 2021 and even during the years of the war.
Я ще раз кілька разів перечитав моє повідомлення від 12 грудня 2024 року, де, Алена, я розмістив твій електронний лист від 8 грудня 2024 року, у якому ти описувала святкування Дня подяки твоєю сім’єю за американським стилем з 2021 року і навіть у воєнні роки.
I was especially moved again by the paragraph where you said, “What will happen in 2025 I don’t know and no one knows, but we will gather to celebrate this beautiful event. Although this is not a tradition of our people, we also like it very much, because it has a beautiful essence, truth, grain.”
Мене особливо знову зворушив абзац, де ви сказали: «Що станеться у 2025 році, я не знаю і ніхто не знає, але ми зберемося, щоб відсвяткувати цю прекрасну подію. Хоча це не традиція нашого народу, нам вона також дуже подобається, бо має прекрасну сутність, істину, зерно.»
Now I have read about and seen the news reports on the greatly increased and deadly missile and drone attacks on Ukraine and especially in Kiev on the energy infrastructure – to make the coming cold and dark Ukrainian winter even colder and darker – and upon civilian targets included apartment buildings.
Тепер я прочитав і бачив новинні репортажі про значно збільшені та смертельні ракетні та дронові атаки на Україну, особливо в Києві, на енергетичну інфраструктуру — щоб зробити прийдешню холодну та темну українську зиму ще холоднішою та темнішою — а також по цивільних об’єктах, включно з житловими будинками.
And I reread many of my Ukrainian postings, reading how you live on the 11th floor of your building and from your window you can see the drones flying into central Kiev, and how you, Maxim, have been very concerned for the safety of your family, and that there is no shelter in your building and that to reach a shelter you would need to go outside the apartment and take a 10-15 minute walk to the shelter which is just the basement of a kindergarten building, and you have said more than once that you have felt you would die in a missile strike, which sadly for me, I understand is a potential for you and your family living in Ukraine.
І я перечитав багато моїх українських дописів, читаючи про те, як ви живете на 11-му поверсі вашого будинку і з вашого вікна видно, як дрони літають у центрі Києва, і як ти, Максим, дуже хвилюєшся за безпеку своєї родини, і що у вашому будинку немає укриття, і щоб дістатися до укриття, вам довелося б вийти з квартири і пройти 10-15 хвилин до укриття, що насправді є підвалом дитячого садка, і ти не раз казав, що відчував, ніби помреш під час ракетного удару, що, на жаль для мене, я розумію як потенційну загрозу для тебе та твоєї родини, яка живе в Україні.
Now you have always written of your trust in the Lord and have praised Him for His care for the just and His judgment against the wicked and violent. But within my human heart, I consider all these things, plus the intensity of the missile and drone strikes and deaths of civilians, including children, occurring daily it seems. And then my concern for you and your family, and all others that I know, and for all Ukrainians within my troubled mind and soul just continues to deepen and expand.
Тепер ти завжди писав про свою довіру до Господа і славив Його за турботу про праведних та суд над злими й насильницькими. Але в моєму людському серці я розмірковую про все це, плюс про інтенсивність ракетних та дронових ударів і щоденні смерті мирних жителів, включаючи дітей, які, здається, відбуваються кожного дня. І тоді моя турбота про тебе та твою родину, і про всіх інших, кого я знаю, і про всіх українців у моєму тривожному розумі та душі просто продовжує поглиблюватися та розширюватися.
But I also trust in the Lord, and I take my troubled mind and soul Him in intimate prayer, who I know hears my prayers, and I earnestly daily pray for all of you, as is proper and right and founded upon my pursuit of fulfilling the two great commandments of loving God and loving my neighbor as myself. And this love certainly includes you and my close friends in Ukraine and really all Ukrainians and the nation as a whole, for the Lord has made all of you, my neighbor. And I bring before the Lord the evil men who continue the war or support it, and I pray for an end to the brutal Russian attacks upon Ukraine and all of you and for the preservation of Ukraine as a nation, and as a distinct people with its distinct culture and language. For these things I cry out to the Lord.
Але я також довіряю Господу і звертаю свій стурбований розум та душу до Нього у близькій молитві, бо знаю, що Він чує мої молитви, і я щодня щиро молюся за всіх вас, як це належить і правильно, спираючись на моє прагнення виконувати дві великі заповіді: любити Бога й любити ближнього, як самого себе. І ця любов, безумовно, включає вас та моїх близьких друзів в Україні і справді всіх українців та країну в цілому, бо Господь створив вас усіх, мій ближній. І я приношу перед Господа злих людей, які продовжують війну або її підтримують, і молюся про припинення жорстоких російських нападів на Україну і на всіх вас, а також про збереження України як нації, як окремого народу з його унікальною культурою та мовою. Про ці речі я взиваю до Господа.
My prayers are part of my Thanksgiving gifts to you, but I also wanted to send my own joyful greetings for a blessed and joyous and safe Thanksgiving. Let me know what you are planning in hope. I always thank the Lord for all of you and the friendship and Christian love you have always shown me.
Мої молитви є частиною моїх подячних подарунків для вас, але я також хотів надіслати свої особисті радісні вітання з побажанням благословенного, радісного та безпечного Дня подяки. Дайте знати, що ви плануєте з надією. Я завжди дякую Господу за всіх вас, за дружбу та християнську любов, яку ви завжди мені проявляли.
Here, my daughter and son-in-law and the two children will come down here to Los Angeles to spend the holiday week with us, and we will go to dinner on Thanksgiving at my sister’s house with her family not far from us. I will bring the sliced ham with a sweet apricot-based glazing upon it. My wife will bring her version of the slightly sweet doughy rolls my mother always made for our family for Thanksgiving and other events.
Тут моя дочка з чоловіком і двоє дітей приїдуть до Лос-Анджелеса, щоб провести з нами святковий тиждень, а ми підемо на вечерю на День подяки до моєї сестри додому з її родиною недалеко від нас. Я принесу нарізану шинку з глазур’ю на основі солодкого абрикоса. Моя дружина принесе свій варіант трохи солодких тістових булочок, які моя мати завжди робила для нашої родини на День подяки та інші святкові заходи.
Please continue to pray for the Lord’s mercy and intervention upon our country as the rhetoric of hate, revenge, injustice, and threats of violence and military action against our own cities and citizens and other nations seems to intensify and increase every day. Pray that the Lord would raise up government officials and elected representatives of integrity, courage, and a true love of our country, to stand up against and counter the chaos and oppression and injustice which the current Administration is intent on bringing upon us.
Будь ласка, продовжуйте молитися за милість Господа та Його втручання в нашу країну, оскільки риторика ненависті, помсти, несправедливості та загроз насильством і військовими діями проти наших власних міст і громадян та інших країн, схоже, щодня посилюється. Моліться, щоб Господь підніс урядовців та обраних представників із чесністю, мужністю та справжньою любов’ю до нашої країни, щоб вони виступили проти хаосу, гніту та несправедливості, які нинішня адміністрація прагне впровадити проти нас.
And pray for me that I will continue to pursue the Lord and respond always to the Holy Spirit in diligently doing everything I can to give witness with my life to the love of God and Christ’s gospel of peace, love, healing, and eternal life.
І моліться за мене, щоб я й надалі прагнув Господа і завжди відповідав Святому Духу, сумлінно роблячи все, що можу, щоб своїм життям свідчити про любов Бога та Євангеліє миру, любові, зцілення та вічного життя Христа.
