A Meditation on the Fifth Autumn Equinox Since Ukraine was Invaded and the War Began. Yes…the Fifth Year.

I took the photo of this post the day after the autumn equinox, having risen too late the morning before to capture the sunlight streaming through the east-facing kitchen window in its strength and brilliance, as the sun rose above my neighbor’s tall juniper trees.
For on the day of the equinox, when I entered the kitchen and only saw the last faint vestiges of the sunlight playing directly into the kitchen, I immediately thought of my friends in Ukraine who used to sit at the kitchen table in the morning, and I knew then that I would write a meditation upon them, and the war still continuing in its fifth year.
So, I wanted to take a photo of the autumn equinox morning sunlight streaming into our kitchen, as the sunlight of the autumn equinox enters the kitchen with the same angle and intensity as the light of the spring equinox.
And in the years prior to the invasion and war upon Ukraine, during the time of the spring equinox, the wonderful brilliant golden light of the early morning would illumine the chairs and the place upon the kitchen table where my friends Maxim or Igor or others sat, cradling a coffee mug in their hands, slowly sipping themselves fully awake, before leaving for church early enough for time to stand in the breakfast lines, before happily herding into the Worship Center with literally another two thousand other men, to catch the morning opening sessions of the church conference.
So now in the fifth autumn equinox since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the drones and missiles continue to rain down on the nation, but now with increased intensity upon the energy and food warehouses and other civilian targets.
For, yes, of course, for winter is coming – with the air attacks preparing the way for a Ukrainian winter of unmitigable cold and food insecurities for the Ukrainians – including the children shivering in bed, and those in school learning how to color with crayons with mittens covering their little hands – the images coming with faces resembling my grandchildren, and the faces of those precious ones in the preschool I pass here on my walks.
And all this as just part of the longest, costliest, and deadliest destructive war in Europe since World War II – and all of it upon Kyiv and all of Ukraine – a war originally designed and planned to last just a couple of weeks, with multiple proclamations over the years that peace was on the way if only the Ukrainians would…
Yet now the war continues with even greater intensity, destruction, and death, but here with this meditation, I will not again specifically write about those whose actions, or nonactions, have prolonged the war for whatever their heart reasonings may be, for I have already written of them, and their supporters many times, and they remain as they were.
And here within my home and within my heart, I mark the times of the war with seasons more than dates, with the spring and autumn equinoxes, when the sunlight that streamed into our kitchen illuminated the places where our Ukrainian friends and guests sat with the clarity of the morning’s golden light. That has not changed. The light still flashes into our home in the morning from the east.
As always, the sun still rises. Light still floods the San Fernando Valley and Kyiv and Ukraine with each new dawn. These facts I know, and they are still true. And God still declares that He exercises lovingkindness, justice, and righteousness upon the earth because He delights in these things.
And in this meditation, in my heart, I have considered before the Lord, the passion with which I bring before Him those who continue to support by actions or silence or tacit approval, the murder and destruction in Ukraine.
But along with my passion in prayer, there is also a sadness and a burden even for those of such cruelly hardened hearts, for they are already judged, and without an understanding and acknowledgement of their evil and a turning from it, they will continue to live and then die under the judgement of God from which there is no appeal or escape.
So now – in the fifth year of the war upon Ukraine, Maxim and Igor bravely continue to live their lives, surviving for themselves and those they love as best they can, still focused on serving God and loving their families and teaching and ministering to their neighbors and those within their church community.
And I continue to pray, and meditate, and write and post – doing what I can – these things of me have not changed, and by the strengthening and grace of God will not change, for our God does not change, but remains steadfast in love and grace, even in very difficult and increasingly evil and dangerous times, such of which surrounds us now.
