Third Granddaughter – 02/23/26
…and with prom night two nights away, she decided, needed, to try on her dress and jewelry to see how she would look. And as she had assumed, she was beautiful with a wide eyed approach to life, a giddy approach through middle school and her first year in high school – it worked – but now at the pinnacle of her high school success – yes, prom queen – still wide eyed and cute, and her dress, her costume – that’s what it was for the night – perfect…
But now her wide eyes saw others, perhaps saw too much, which caused thought – for there was her date, a friend of sorts, like he was a friend to everyone. But he wasn’t cute and giddy, no, it was … worse … was that the word? … no, not really … for he was quietly handsome, and gently quiet, with big eyes like her, but not as well off and at first he just told her plainly that he might not have enough money – just out in the open in front of others – for he worked a bit, to help his mom and younger brother and sister – just like in an old time dusty movie – and he kept her waiting a few days before answering – her, the prom queen…
But with his wide eyes … she knew he saw more, for when his eyes were upon her, he smiled gently and friendly, as if he was thinking, as if he saw more than she wanted … well maybe not that … maybe just more than she knew about herself. For before, it was enough for others to believe what she wanted them to see. But with him, handsome and quiet and off away to the university on scholarship, she to college nearby, but now…she wanted more from him, of him…what a strange idea to think…but how to do that?
Perhaps…for him in two nights, she could ignore her costume and her naturally seeking to parade about…and just be with him … something new and unknown… But then maybe he can help her see what he sees, and maybe what he sees will be good for her, and the parade can finally be over…and maybe that can be … the pinnacle of her high school success…
