In the first couple of days of the war, many of the residents of Kyiv left the capital by any means possible because of the fear of the invading and advancing Russian tanks reaching the city.

The War Against Ukraine & the Ukrainian People, Now Entering its 5th Year – February 24, 2022 – February 24, 2026

Війна проти України та українського народу, що тепер входить у п’ятий рік – 24 лютого 2022 року – 24 лютого 2026 року

On Tuesday, February 24, 2026, a few days prior to the posting of this blog, Ukraine entered into the fifth year of the Russian initiated war of aggression against them. Ukraine, and the Ukrainian people, through the intensified missile and drone attacks upon civilians and their housing, and the national energy infrastructure, now endure incessant magnified destruction, harm, death, and freezing temperatures, in the dead of the Ukrainian winter cold.

Вівторок, 24 лютого 2026 року, за кілька днів до публікації цього блогу, Україна вступила в п’ятий рік війни агресії, розпочатої Росією проти неї. Україна та український народ через посилені ракетні та дронові атаки на цивільних осіб, їхнє житло та національну енергетичну інфраструктуру тепер витримують постійні масштабні руйнування, шкоду, смерть та холод, у самому розпалі української зимової прохолоди.

To help pause the mind and help mend and rest the hearts of my readership from their almost overwhelming thoughts and deep concerns for the Ukrainian people, I have prepared this blog that provides a Ukrainian-centered perspective on the war and its effects upon them. This blog then memorializes the courage and sacrifice by Ukraine as a nation, and the terrible suffering and continued courageous resistance of the Ukrainian people to this horrendous war, now a “total war” against the Ukrainian armed forces and the civilian population, which by international law is banned and constitutes a war crime.

Щоб допомогти призупинити розум і допомогти відновити та відпочити серця моїх читачів від їхніх майже непереборних думок і глибоких турбот про український народ, я підготував цей блог, який надає українсько-орієнтовану перспективу на війну та її вплив на них. Цей блог також увіковічнює мужність і жертви України як нації, а також жахливі страждання і продовження мужнього опору українського народу проти цієї жахливої війни, яка тепер є «тотальною війною» проти українських збройних сил і цивільного населення, що за міжнародним правом заборонено і становить військовий злочин.

And for this blog, out of the fifty-five blogs that I have written about the Russian aggression against Ukraine, I have selected nine blogs to illustrate year by year how this war has deeply touched my friends and their families, starting with 2022, the year of the current Russian invasion of Ukraine.

І для цього блогу, з-поміж п’ятдесяти п’яти блогів, які я написав про російську агресію проти України, я обрав дев’ять блогів, щоб проілюструвати рік за роком, як ця війна глибоко торкнулася моїх друзів та їхніх родин, починаючи з 2022 року, року нинішнього російського вторгнення в Україну.

But these blogs and the stories they tell, are but a miniscule amount of the multiple galaxies of stories and words that emanate from the scarred lives and bruised souls of the more than thirty-six million Ukrainians suffering under the brutality of this now limitless war, that is supported and continued by evil, violent, and godless men.

Але ці блоги та розповіді, які вони висвітлюють, є лише крихітною часткою багатьох галактик історій і слів, що виходять із понівечених життів і побитих душ понад тридцяти шести мільйонів українців, які страждають під жорстокістю цієї тепер безмежної війни, що підтримується та триває злими, жорстокими й безбожними людьми.

And, of course, as in a time of war, not all the selected blogs are easy to read, for they deal with the realities of the war. But I believe as they are read year by year in chronological order, the depth and horror of this suffering will emerge, as will the rise of the heroics of just attempting to maintain “ordinary” lives within decidedly unordinary times.  

І, звичайно, як у часи війни, не всі обрані блоги легко читаються, адже вони стосуються реалій війни. Але я вірю, що, читаючи їх рік за роком у хронологічному порядку, виявиться глибина й жах цього страждання, а також піднесення героїзму просто через спроби зберегти «звичайне» життя у надзвичайно незвичайні часи.

For ordinary life requires fulfilling the necessary tasks and obligations of making sure children receive adequate food and sleep and are escorted safely to school, that one goes to the market for food and other shops for family essentials, that one gets to work on time, that one visits grandma when promised and necessary, and that the church is prepared for the Sunday morning service and worship – all under increasingly impossible circumstances.

Бо звичайне життя вимагає виконання необхідних завдань і обов’язків: забезпечити, щоб діти отримували достатньо їжі та сну і були безпечно відведені до школи, щоб хтось ходив на ринок за продуктами та в інші магазини за сімейними необхідностями, щоб хтось своєчасно добирався на роботу, щоб відвідати бабусю, коли обіцяно і це необхідно, та щоб церква була готова до недільного ранкового богослужіння та молитви – усе це в умовах, що стають дедалі більш неможливими.

And this is an awful, devastating, and barbaric war, that is waged in real time – our time – now the longest and the deadliest and the most destructive and costly war to roll over Europe since World War II.  The latest UN statistics indicate that over 43,000 Ukrainian soldiers – fathers, husbands, brothers, sons, mothers, daughters, wives, lovers, relatives, neighbors and friends – have died, along with almost 14,000 civilians which includes about 650 children. Additionally, almost 1800 children have been injured. UN statistics also noted that 2025 has been the deadliest year of the war for Ukrainians, mostly attributed to the increased Russian attacks upon civilians with missiles and drones.

І це жахлива, руйнівна та варварська війна, яка ведеться у реальному часі – нашому часі – зараз найтриваліша, найсмертоносніша та найруйнівніша і найдорожча війна, що прокотилася Європою з часів Другої світової війни. Остання статистика ООН показує, що понад 43 000 українських солдатів – батьки, чоловіки, брати, сини, матері, доньки, дружини, кохані, родичі, сусіди та друзі – загинули, разом із майже 14 000 цивільними, включаючи близько 650 дітей. Крім того, майже 1800 дітей були поранені. Статистика ООН також зазначає, що 2025 рік став найсмертоноснішим роком війни для українців, зокрема через збільшену кількість російських атак на цивільних за допомогою ракет та дронів.

So, what follows below, year by year, are blogs that were written in all four years of the war.  The selected blogs start in 2020, with the first Ukrainian blog of the war, where I share the emails that shocked friends sent me describing the opening hours of the invasion – like most Ukrainians, they did not believe, even with the massive troop buildup, that Russia would actually invade. The selected blogs end in 2025 where I write of the sad face of a boy in a church bible study and reflect upon another blog that I wrote of the death of a three-month-old boy.

Отже, нижче, рік за роком, представлені блоги, які були написані протягом усіх чотирьох років війни. Обрані блоги починаються з 2020 року, з першого українського блогу війни, де я ділюся електронними листами, які надіслали мені друзів, шоковані описом перших годин вторгнення – як і більшість українців, вони не вірили, навіть при величезному накопиченні військ, що Росія справді вторгнеться. Обрані блоги закінчуються 2025 року, де я пишу про сумне обличчя хлопчика на біблійному занятті в церкві та розмірковую над ще одним блогом, який я писав про смерть тримісячного хлопчика.

Again, many of the blogs are not an easy read, but the open and intelligent journey through the blogs of these years of the war, are well worth the time.

Знову ж таки, багато блогів не є легким читанням, але відкрита та розумна подорож через блоги цих років війни варта часу.

This blog, now making fifty-six Ukrainian blogs, is the third Ukrainian blog of 2026.

Цей блог, який тепер робить п’ятдесят шість українських блогів, є третім українським блогом 2026 року.

And I actually hope that I do not need to add a year of selected blogs for 2026 to memorialize the beginning of a 6th year of this war of Russian aggression. But rather I hope that in this year, a just and lasting peace with funds for rebuilding and restoration, and with solid security guarantees by the EU and NATO, and EU troops stationed in Ukraine, will be the topic of one of my Ukrainian posts about the war for 2026, based on the email communications of my friends in Ukraine.

І я насправді сподіваюся, що мені не доведеться додавати рік обраних блогів за 2026 рік, щоб вшанувати початок шостого року цієї війни російської агресії. Але я радше сподіваюся, що цього року тема одного з моїх українських постів про війну за 2026 рік буде про справедливий та тривалий мир з фондами для відбудови та відновлення, а також з надійними гарантіями безпеки з боку ЄС і НАТО та з розташуванням європейських військ в Україні, ґрунтуючись на електронних листах моїх друзів в Україні.

I hope then that I can move on to blogs about how the nation of Ukraine and the Ukrainian people are memorializing the end of the war and remembering and honoring the deaths and sacrifices of so many fellow Ukrainians on the national and community level. And then I can also write of the reconstruction of Ukraine and a true return to normalcy and peace for the people of Ukraine and my friends and their families. I know that these are really just hopes, as no one currently can make statements with any surety about the future of Ukraine.

Сподіваюся, що тоді я зможу перейти до блогів про те, як нація України та український народ вшановують закінчення війни та пам’ятають і шанують смерті та жертви такої кількості співвітчизників на національному та громадському рівні. А потім я також зможу писати про відновлення України та справжнє повернення до нормального життя та миру для народу України, моїх друзів та їхніх родин. Я знаю, що це насправді лише надії, оскільки наразі ніхто не може робити тверджень із певністю щодо майбутнього України.

And the only thing I can say with surety, is that I will continue to pray and be concerned and write of the lives of my friends and their families who still live under the ever-darkening cloud of war in Ukraine.

І єдине, що я можу сказати з упевненістю, це те, що я й надалі буду молитися, перейматися та писати про життя моїх друзів та їхніх родин, які досі живуть під все темнішою хмарою війни в Україні.
