I received an email from Maxim on January 30 in response to an email I sent him on January 27, telling him that on January 25 I had posted the photo that he sent me of his family. In my email, I asked how he and his family were. Below is Maxim’s email reply of January 30. It is short and simply written, but weighted with concerns and sadness spoken of with a clarity and honesty which touches deeply our and all mingled souls.

Я отримав електронний лист від Максима 30 січня у відповідь на електронний лист, який я надіслав йому 27 січня, в якому повідомлялося, що 25 січня я опублікував надіслану мені фотографію своєї родини. У своєму електронному листі я запитав, як він і його сім’я. Нижче наведено відповідь Максима на електронну пошту від 30 січня. Вона коротка і просто написана, але сповнена турбот і смутку, про які говорять з ясністю і чесністю, які глибоко торкаються наших і всіх змішаних душ.

Мир тобі, Кріс!

I just want to describe in a nutshell what is going on in our lives.  

Я просто хочу описати в двох словах, що відбувається в нашому житті.

Our power supply is slowly getting better. We continue to serve in every way we can. A lot of people are being drafted into the army right now. We only have water and heating in our homes when there is electricity.

Наше енергопостачання повільно покращується. Ми продовжуємо служити, чим можемо. Зараз в армію призивається дуже багато людей. Вода і опалення в наших будинках є тільки тоді, коли є електрика.

We learn to adapt to any circumstances. We have to keep living. Sometimes there is a great sadness in the heart because there is no end in sight to this war. I can’t even believe it’s been almost a year. I might be able to go to the conference this year. Grace Church does a lot to help the seminary and the people of Ukraine.

Вчимося пристосовуватися до будь-яких обставин. Ми повинні продовжувати жити. Іноді в серці великий смуток, тому що цій війні не видно кінця. Я навіть не можу повірити, що минув майже рік. Можливо, я зможу поїхати на конференцію цього року. Церква Благодаті робить багато, щоб допомогти семінарії та народу України.

The photo of this posting is another photo I took of the garden on the day the clouds parted and flooded the garden with brilliant sunlight. The leafless tree in this photo is a liquid amber which isn’t always in leaf when Maxim and others from Ukraine come to stay with us in early March to attend the church conference. He was always a little concerned about the tree, and wondered if it was dying, but I assured him it was still just dormant from the winter. If he comes to the conference this year, as he indicates the possibility in his email, it still may be leafless. But I will again assure him it is still just dormant and promise to take a photo of it later when leaves begin to sprout, to send it to him as evidence that spring has finally really come to Southern California. And thus, it will be a gentle reminder that just like the return of new life in the spring, we will continue to hope and pray that a new life of peace and restoration will come upon Ukraine, and that the war will end, if by when the liquid amber begins to leaf, it has not already ceased.

Фотографія цієї публікації – ще одна фотографія, яку я зробив із саду в день, коли хмари розступилися і затопили сад яскравим сонячним світлом. Безлисте дерево на цій фотографії – рідкий бурштин, який не завжди в листі, коли Максим та інші з України приїжджають до нас на початку березня, щоб відвідати церковну конференцію. Він завжди був трохи стурбований деревом і цікавився, чи не вмирає воно, але я запевнив його, що воно все ще просто спить від зими.Якщо він приїде на конференцію цього року, як він вказує на таку можливість у своєму електронному листі, вона все одно може бути безлистою. Але я ще раз запевню його, що він все ще просто дрімає, і обіцяю сфотографувати його пізніше, коли почнуть проростати листя, щоб надіслати його йому як доказ того, що весна нарешті дійсно прийшла в Південну Каліфорнію. І таким чином, це буде ніжним нагадуванням про те, що так само, як і повернення нового життя навесні, ми продовжуватимемо сподіватися і молитися, щоб в Україну прийшло нове життя миру та відновлення, і що війна закінчиться, якщо до того часу, коли рідкий бурштин почне листя, вона ще не припиниться.

We will also make sure that if he and others come in March, there will still be tangelos and blood oranges upon the trees for them to enjoy and feast upon. We hope to see them, but there just seems to be so many variables…

Ми також подбаємо про те, щоб якщо він та інші прийдуть у березні, на деревах все ще залишаться танжело та криваві апельсини, якими вони зможуть насолоджуватися та бенкетувати. Ми сподіваємося побачити їх, але, здається, є так багато змінних…
