Youngest Daughter – 04/07/14

… and as the years wore on, after she and her husband returned to California, occasionally, for it was to get them together because of their full and busy lives.  But at least once, sometimes twice a year, she would manage to entice her two sisters to her place in the rolling California hills, a place their father had loved when he had visited and eventually quietly stayed, then faded, but, the sisters would be together and for, oh, five years now, they would trek down the slope to the barely wet most of the time creek, then along the path for a bit, then up again just a holler away from the creek to where, surprisingly, five olive trees, old, and gnarled, grew, even flourished it seemed, and then they would spread the blanket they had brought and place the basket of cheeses and bread and crackers and wine and, of course, chocolate, just so upon the blanket in the shade and then they would pick a sample of olives to take back to Alex, also now in the hills, to test for ripeness for his artisanal olive oils.
