When I saw the news about the missile and drone assault on the night of August 4-5, I wrote to my friends in Ukraine again telling them that I was continually seeing on the news the reports about the increasing missile and drone strikes against civilian targets and deaths and that I was praying for them. I also asked them again to pray for us and the growing political divisions and issues stemming from the war with Iran here in the US.
Коли я побачив новину про ракетний та дроновий напад у ніч з 4 на 5 серпня, я знову написав своїм друзям в Україні, кажучи їм, що постійно бачу по новинах повідомлення про зростання ракетних та дронових ударів по цивільних об’єктах і смертей, і що я молюся за них. Я також знову попросив їх молитися за нас та за зростаючі політичні розколи та проблеми, що виникають через війну з Іраном тут, у США.
When I write letters to my friends in Ukraine, I usually wait for responses to post about Ukraine, but with an increasingly burdened heart, I decided to post now. For as a friend, as a writer, and as a person, with so much going on in my life, and in the lives of family, and friends, and with the growing instability in our own country and globally, I am finding that my mind is being continually confronted with multiple competing prayer items – all truly needing prayer. And because of this and finding and taking the time to bring all prayer needs before the Lord, it takes me time to focus and quiet my heart to consider and pray each day about the very real dangers, and the increasing difficulties of life that my dear friends in Ukraine face daily.
Коли я пишу листи своїм друзям в Україні, я зазвичай чекаю відповідей, щоб публікувати щось про Україну, але з дедалі більш обтяженим серцем я вирішив написати зараз. Адже як друг, як письменник і як людина, з такою кількістю справ у моєму житті, у житті моєї родини та друзів, і з наростаючою нестабільністю в нашій країні та у світі, я помічаю, що мій розум постійно стикається з багатьма суперечливими речами, за які треба молитися – всі вони справді потребують молитви. І через це, і через необхідність знайти час, щоб поставити всі потреби перед Господом, мені потрібен час, щоб зосередитися і заспокоїти серце, щодня розмірковуючи та молячись про реальні небезпеки та зростаючі труднощі життя, з якими щодня стикаються мої дорогі друзі в Україні.
And with so much going on in our own country, I realize that in my personal struggle to focus my heart and mind sufficiently on Ukraine for prayer, I am not very different than most Americans. For the issues and tensions within our own country – the war with Iran and its effects on our lives just one of them – generate tensions – and thus distractions from the war against Ukraine – which within our nation are then amplified for political purposes by the constant swirl of strident voices filled with pride, chaos, and arrogance, and even at times, hatred and violence.
І з усього, що відбувається у нашій власній країні, я усвідомлюю, що у моїй особистій боротьбі, щоб сконцентрувати серце та розум на молитві за Україну, я не дуже відрізняюся від більшості американців. Проблеми та напруженість у нашій власній країні – війна з Іраном та її вплив на наше життя лише одна з них – створюють напругу, а отже, відволікають від війни проти України, яка у нашій країні потім ще більше підсилюється з політичних причин постійним потоком різких голосів, сповнених гордості, хаосу та зарозумілості, а часом і ненависті та насильства.
So, amidst all this, I continue to pray, and I continue to write, in the fifth year of this war – the longest and most destructive and deadly conflict in Europe since World War II. And I pray and write now with a greatly increased and more even-keeled sense of urgency, and a far deeper and sustained emotional response to the evil inflicted upon my friends and the Ukrainian people.
Отже, серед усього цього я продовжую молитися і писати в п’ятий рік цієї війни — найдовшого, найруйнівнішого та найсмертельнішого конфлікту в Європі з часів Другої світової війни. І я зараз молюся і пишу з сильно зростаючим, більш врівноваженим відчуттям терміновості та набагато глибшою і тривалою емоційною реакцією на зло, заподіяне моїм друзям і українському народу.
I rarely write in such a personal approach for this website, but sometimes I think occasionally pulling away the coverings has a place for me as a writer, because I then more fully express myself as the person behind the writer. And here I think that it is appropriate to ask my readership to continue to keep informed and concerned about Ukraine – including my close friends and their families who now live under the constant bombardment of Russian missiles and drones – and to ask for prayers for them. All this to do what I can, and what the Lord has equipped and gifted me to accomplish.
Я рідко пишу в такому особистому ключі для цього сайту, але іноді думаю, що час від часу знімати покривала має сенс для мене як для письменника, тому що тоді я повніше виражаю себе як особу за письменником. І тут я вважаю доречним попросити моїх читачів продовжувати цікавитися та переживати за Україну – включно з моїми близькими друзями та їхніми родинами, які зараз живуть під постійними обстрілами російських ракет і дронів – і молитися за них. Все це роблю, щоб зробити те, що можу, і те, до чого Господь мене обладнав і наділив здібностями для досягнення.

Я знову напишу, коли отримаю відповіді від своїх друзів в Україні.

Thanks for continuing to publish the letters you receive from your friends in Ukraine and for your own comments. We’re all feeling overwhelmed by the onslaught of awful news this year, but we must never forget the struggle of the Ukrainian people, especially this summer, as they face Putin’s brutal aerial assault on Kviv and other cities.
