Note: This postcard story, Part 1, and Part 2 to follow, have been designed to connect to and continue, many years later, the postcard story written on 10/25/14 which was just published this year on 06/27/26. (To view the 07/06/26 post, use the specific link below.)
This postcard story, and Part 2, are a way of softening the tragedy of Jeanne Hébuterne’s life by providing an imagined more fulfilled surviving life for her after the death of the artist, Amedeo Modigliani – a sad sigh of homage to her difficult life.
(Use the Met link above to read the Met’s brief history of Modigliani and Jeanne’s life together.) More information about the hard life from which Modigliani came, and the love and tragedy of his and Jeanne’s life together is easily available online.
Granddaughter – 07/15/26
Part 1
…and then my “princess” years ended on my way to university, and then came the wild years when everything was lived and experienced in brilliant clear light… of some sort…or just blurred moments that weren’t moments but just something walked through – conversation with strangers – just words, and laughter somewhere else, in the peripherals of life and consciousness…life…
Then…somehow those years passed away into whatever they were and – suddenly I was walking along the shore, the ocean wind infused with salt – like smelling salts, whatever that used to be – the smell of it, the never ending sound of the waves pounding, the more quiet moment of the water rushing back into the turbulence from which it came, the little crabs burrowing swiftly into the wet water-shining sand – all of a sudden there I was and…I knew it, yes, like waking not from a dream, but a coma, yes a coma…and I was by myself…just again with me, loving that awakening, that feeling – again feeling – a deep, deep, thrill. And I knew then that this was good, and a word came – lonesome – I was lonesome for my life, “unaware” my only spoken vocabulary for a long, long, time.
And then I met John-Pierre, I remember that – a time and place recorded in my memory – another awakening – as in the storage room of memory there was not much walking around and alive…just the blurry edges of the wild, and all that soon dissipated and vanished, like the smoke of something nonexistent.
And now twenty years into the time of John-Pierre – Here, is there love? – with three children now miraculously around, not the virgin birth, no… no, not at all! Two, not children at all anymore, only Phillip, the surprise, the afterglow child, as we said, still a child.
