Prologue – Пролог

On Sunday evening, October 19, I sent the photo and email message below to Igor, as I had been following on the news the missile and drone strikes upon the civilian population in Ukraine and I was very concerned about my friends, about their lives and about their safety.

У неділю ввечері, 19 жовтня, я надіслав Ігору фото та електронного листа, який наведено нижче, оскільки я стежив за новинами про ракетні та дронові удари по цивільному населенню в Україні і дуже турбувався про своїх друзів, про їхнє життя та безпеку.

The strikes have been in multiple Ukrainian cities, especially the capital, Kyiv, hitting again the energy infrastructure and civilian targets such as apartments and schools and markets.  I found that with the increased intensification of the war, and the death and destruction raining down on Ukraine daily and nightly, that I began to deeply feel a need to urgently reach out to them and find out how their lives and hearts and minds were faring under the bombardment. But also, to satisfy my concerns, I also wanted to hear their “voices”, even if it was just echoed through the words of an email. I am not a writer detached from what I write and care about.

Удари відбулися в кількох українських містах, особливо в столиці Києві, знову вражаючи енергетичну інфраструктуру та цивільні об’єкти, такі як квартири, школи та ринки. Я зрозумів, що з посиленням війни та щоденними та нічними смертями й руйнуваннями в Україні я почав відчувати нагальну потребу терміново зв’язатися з ними і дізнатися, як їхнє життя, серця та розуми справляються під обстрілами. Але також, щоб заспокоїти свої турботи, я хотів почути їхні “голоси”, навіть якщо це було лише через слова електронного листа. Я не є письменником, який відсторонено ставиться до того, що він пише і до чого йому не все одно.

For the war centered in Kyiv measured in miles is far from Los Angeles – 6,302 miles – but that is a meaningless statistic incapable of measuring the concern of close friends for one another during the times of uncertainty and the ever-present potential of the loss and harm of war.

Війна, зосереджена в Києві, відстань до Лос-Анджелеса у милях складає 6 302 милі, але це нікчемна статистика, яка не може виміряти турботу близьких друзів один про одного під час невизначеності та постійної потенційної загрози втрати і шкоди через війну.

 Also, even though I use many of the messages that I received from my friends in Ukraine for these postings, I know that much of the correspondence between us benefits my own peace of mind concerning what is happening to them, so that I can know and understand, and in a sense, experience with them what they are living through.  And this for me is the substance of compassion and empathy, and I write so that I can at least help my readers understand some of the dire human situations taking place daily in battered and bleeding Ukraine, a country, a place, more than six thousand miles away from Los Angeles in California, but to me, very close in heart. For that is what compassion is – close in heart.

Також, хоча я використовую багато з повідомлень, які отримав від своїх друзів в Україні для цих публікацій, я знаю, що велика частина нашої переписки сприяє моєму власному душевному спокою стосовно того, що з ними відбувається, щоб я міг знати та розуміти, і в певному сенсі, відчувати разом з ними те, через що вони проходять. І для мене саме це є суттю співчуття та емпатії, і я пишу, щоб принаймні допомогти своїм читачам зрозуміти деякі відчайдушні людські ситуації, що відбуваються щодня в побитій і кровоточивій Україні, країні, місці, що знаходиться понад шість тисяч миль від Лос-Анджелеса в Каліфорнії, але для мене вона дуже близька серцем. Адже саме це і є співчуття – близькість серцем.

For compassion and concern and kindness are acquired, developed, and learned habits of the heart, and the promotion of these godly behaviors is one reason why I write generally, but now, with Ukraine, I write of these virtues so that others have the opportunity to also learn more deeply along with me, about compassion and empathy specifically for Ukraine and the Ukrainians as a distinct people and culture.  And this opportunity to learn of these graces is, I think, one of the primary reasons, articulated or not, that a significant percentage of my readers read what I write.  This I hope, this I also believe to be true.

Бо співчуття, турбота та доброта — це здобуті, розвинуті та засвоєні звички серця, і пропагування цих благочестивих поведінок є однією з причин, чому я взагалі пишу, але тепер, щодо України, я пишу про ці чесноти, щоб інші мали можливість також глибше пізнати разом зі мною співчуття та емпатію, зокрема для України та українців як окремого народу і культури. І ця можливість навчитися цих ласк, як мені здається, є однією з основних причин, висловлених чи ні, чому значний відсоток моїх читачів читає те, що я пишу. Сподіваюся на це, і також вірю, що це правда.

Будь ласка, продовжуйте молитися за нашу країну, адже ситуація, здається, стає все гіршою і гіршою… І мене особливо засмучує… остання й найбільш відкрита зрада України. … Я постійно молюся за Україну та за всіх вас.

At the protest I counted at least three Ukrainian flags. Most Americans support Ukraine.

На протесті я нарахував щонайменше три українські прапори. Більшість американців підтримують Україну.

Thank you very much for your letter! Thank you for your prayers for us. We pray that our Lord will act powerfully in the world, both here and there, destroy evil, and triumph with His divine justice.

Щиро дякуємо за ваш лист! Дякуємо за ваші молитви за нас. Ми молимося, щоб наш Господь діяв могутньо у світі, як тут, так і там, знищував зло і перемагав Своєю божественною справедливістю.

We are doing well, by the grace of God. We are tired of living in the midst of war and are waiting for peace from the Lord in our country. But let all glory be to Him!

Ми добре, милістю Божою. Ми втомилися жити посеред війни і чекаємо на мир від Господа в нашій країні. Але вся слава нехай буде Йому!

In one week, our eldest daughter … will have her Christian wedding. She will marry her groom, … Please pray for our family. This is a new experience for us.

За тиждень наша старша донька … відсвяткує своє християнське весілля. Вона вийде заміж за свого нареченого, … Будь ласка, моліться за нашу родину. Це для нас новий досвід.

Postscript – Постскриптум

I receive great encouragement through the emails I receive from my friends in Ukraine. I admire their honesty and their resilience of life and faith. Above, Igor writes of his prayer that our God would destroy the evil affecting both of our countries, the fact that he is tired of living in the midst of war, that he is waiting for peace from the Lord, and that his eldest daughter will have her Christian wedding.

Я отримую велике підбадьорення через електронні листи, які отримую від моїх друзів в Україні. Я захоплююся їхньою чесністю та стійкістю у житті та вірі. Вище Ігор пише про свою молитву, щоб наш Бог знищив зло, що впливає на обидві наші країни, про те, що він втомився жити посеред війни, що він чекає миру від Господа, і що його старша донька матиме своє християнське весілля.

And, as the date of this posting, the war still rages, by now his eldest daughter is already married and starting her new life, Igor and Natalia’s life continue on with their younger daughter still with them, and their faith is still intact and thriving and encouraging mine, and I also hope now encouraging the life and faith of my readers.

І на момент публікації цього тексту війна досі триває, на сьогодні його старша дочка вже одружена і починає нове життя, життя Ігоря та Наталії триває з їхньою молодшою дочкою, яка ще з ними, а їхня віра досі міцна, розвивається і надихає мою, і я також сподіваюся, що тепер надихає життя та віру моїх читачів.
