… and being in a new place, a new physical place, after a while, or at least until you understood it … means that you need to be … need to become a new, or go to … a new something within you, yes, that was it. That’s why in the evening he came to … no, he was called to the water, to the harbor, to walk along it by himself, for he did not ask or invite others, no, not one, to come with him, and he told no one where he was going … for he wanted to be alone, for it was just him … who was called … whatever it was that called … just called him.
And as he walked along the wharf, the walkway along the harbor, he smelled the ocean, which when he listened, called … or better just spoke something … without words … something deep and ancient … not meant to be understood but just heard … for that it seemed was its purpose … and … not purpose … but presence … could that be right? … a deeper … Presence … calling, speaking to his being … without words … without sound … but still with voice and meaning, but not something he understood … but with a knowledge that in time … yes, days, no, years … no, a lifetime … that the meaning and … purpose would unfold … blossoming … just like the first notes of a symphony … beautiful and profound … which was to, and of, and for his being … from a Presence not of himself…
For that is why he was called to the harbor by himself, and why there was no impulse to invite another … why he was made to be alone and come … with a peace and openness he had never been made to feel before. And he came by himself … but had not remained by himself and alone … for the Presence without words had made his voice and being known and he knew … somehow, that the Presence … remained and stayed … and perhaps that was the purpose of its calling.
And now with the same peace and life the voice had imparted, he turned and walked back to the university, for his first-year classes were to start tomorrow.
