Mary Cassatt – Feeding the Ducks – The Metropolitan Museum of Art

…and once when she was just a little girl, her pretty mother and older grandmother took her to a park that had a little lake, and they all got into a boat and they brought bread and out on to the water of the lake they went, and the water was so beautiful for it was like a mirror, and on it she could see the clouds, like in the sky, and the trees and the flowers that grew and hung over the lake, and the water was like a moving, living, mirror of sky and greens and pinks and reds and even gold as the sunlight, flashing through the leaves of the trees, sparkled upon the water.  And it was all so beautiful, and she reached to the water with her small hand, her careful grandmother holding on to her other hand, and as she touched all the color upon the water, all the color and light just laughed silently in many ripples and tiny waves.  And because she touched the water with her hands, ducks came to greet her, white ducks and mallards and they quacked, and she threw bread to them, and they quacked more.   Love, Papa
