Around the Spring Equinox, Maxim, Igor & Other Ukrainian Friends Would be with Us, & Yesterday, as I Thought of Them, I Took Photos of the Morning Sunlight of the Autumn Equinox Shining, as if by Memory, Upon Where They Sat at Our Table in the Spring, in the Early Morning Light.

Навколо весняного рівнодення Максим, Ігор та інші українські друзі будуть з нами, а вчора, коли я думав про них, я зробив фотографії ранкового сонячного світла осіннього рівнодення, що сяяло, немов з пам’яті, на тому місці, де вони сиділи за нашим столом весною, в ранковому світлі.

In my last blog of September 18, amidst the intensified missile and drone attacks upon Kyiv and other cities in Ukraine, I posted the last email I had sent to Maxim and Alena on September 8. And since I had not heard from them since August t24, I asked them how they were and where they were living. As of September 18, I had not received a response to my September 8 email.

У моєму останньому блозі від 18 вересня, на тлі посилених ракетних і дронових атак на Київ та інші міста України, я опублікував останній електронний лист, який я надіслав Максиму та Алені 8 вересня. І оскільки я не отримував від них новин з 24 серпня, я спитав, як вони, і де живуть. Станом на 18 вересня я не отримав відповіді на мій електронний лист від 8 вересня.

During that time in which I did not receive a reply from Maxim, on September 15, I also wrote Igor and his wife, Natalia, who I had also not communicated with for a long time, inquiring how they were and where they were living.

Протягом того часу, коли я не отримував відповіді від Максима, 15 вересня я також написав Ігорю та його дружині Наталії, з якими я також давно не спілкувався, дізнаючись, як вони поживають і де живуть.

Later, on September 15th, I received an email back from Igor.

Пізніше, 15 вересня, я отримав листа від Ігоря.

Then on September 19, I received an email from Maxim. On September 20, I responded to Maxim thanking him for his response and also asking for a photo of he and Alena and other photos that I could use in posts. Later on September 20, I received the photo of Maxim and Alena that I had requested and included at the end of this post.

Тоді, 19 вересня, я отримав електронного листа від Максима. 20 вересня я відповів Максиму, подякувавши йому за відповідь і додатково попросивши фото нього і Алєни, а також інші фото, які я міг би використати в дописах. Пізніше, того ж дня, 20 вересня, я отримав фото Максима і Алєни, яке я просив, і додав його в кінець цього допису.

Now, also on Sunday, September 21, in the early morning , as I stirred about the kitchen making my coffee and thinking through how to write/ frame all these emails/events for a post, I realized it was the Autumn Equinox and that the sunlight hitting the kitchen table was the same as when Maxim and Igor stayed at our house around the Spring Equinox. And the sunlight in its brilliance reminded me so much of the enjoyment of having them with us for a number of days, that I took a photo of the light upon the kitchen table where they used to sit in the morning – so fitting to the moment, and to that day on which I began writing and putting together this post.

Тепер, також у неділю, 21 вересня, в ранкові години, коли я готував свою каву на кухні та думав про те, як написати/структурувати всі ці електронні листи/події для допису, я зрозумів, що це осіннє рівнодення і що сонячне світло, що падало на кухонний стіл, було таким же, як коли Максим і Ігор залишалися у нас вдома близько весняного рівнодення. А це яскраве сонячне світло так нагадувало мені про приємність мати їх з нами протягом кількох днів, що я зробив фото світла на кухонному столі, де вони зазвичай сиділи вранці – це було так вчасно, до моменту і до того дня, коли я почав писати і збирати цей допис.

It has been a long time since I’ve communicated with you and also heard from you, but I know of the evils that have continued with the war and the increased intensity of the missile and drone strikes.

Минуло багато часу з тих пір, як я спілкувався з тобою і чув від тебе, але я знаю про злі справи, що продовжуються з війною, і про підвищену інтенсивність ракетних та дронових ударів.

I have been following the news about Ukraine, and the daily missile and drone strikes against the energy infrastructure and even now against Ukrainian government buildings and the foreign government offices and multiple civilian targets.  And now the Russians have been further emboldened by the lack of a strong US response and have added drone attacks into Poland and now Romania as a way of testing the resolve of the EU and NATO. And I fear that the US will no longer effectively support Ukraine or NATO, which amounts to a tragic betrayal of Ukraine. And I have prayed for the Lord’s mercy upon Ukraine and that the EU countries will step up and increase their support of Ukraine. For it burdens my heart how much you both and your daughters must be suffering through all of this, and also how everyone that I know in Ukraine is suffering, as destruction and death continues to come upon all Ukrainians including men, women and even children.

Я стежив за новинами про Україну, щоденними ракетними та дроновими ударами по енергетичній інфраструктурі і, навіть тепер, по будівлях українського уряду, іноземних урядових офісах та багатьох цивільних об’єктах. А зараз росіяни ще більше впевнилися в своїх силах через нестачу сильного реагування США і почали дронові атаки на Польщу, а тепер і на Румунію, щоб випробувати рішучість ЄС і НАТО. І я боюся, що США більше не будуть ефективно підтримувати Україну чи НАТО, що є трагічною зрадою України. Я молився про милість Господа для України і сподіваюся, що країни ЄС активізують та посилять свою підтримку України. Мені боляче бачити, як ви з дочками страждаєте від всього цього, і також з усіма, кого я знаю в Україні, які страждають, оскільки руйнування та смерть продовжують спіткати всіх українців, включаючи чоловіків, жінок і навіть дітейМинуло багато часу з тих пір, як я спілкувався з тобою і чув тебе, але я знаю про злі справи, що продовжуються з війною, і про підвищену інтенсивність ракетних та дронових ударів .

I last heard from Maxim some time ago when he told me that he was in France seeking medical testing and I’m not sure now where they are.

Останній раз я чув від Максима деякий час тому, коли він сказав мені, що він у Франції для проходження медичних обстежень, і я тепер не впевнений, де вони.

Are you still in Kyiv?  Is the seminary still meeting for classes?  How is the church managing against all the destruction that still rains down upon the city?

Ви все ще в Києві? Семінарія досі проводить заняття? Як церква справляється з усім знищенням, яке досі обрушується на місто?

I pray constantly for Ukraine. And I also ask that along with all of your prayers for your own country, that you also pray for us and our country as the US government seems to be coming apart, and the chaos, confusion, political violence and assassinations, and the placement of federal troops in more cities, is now increasing. It is a difficult time for many here, and the international church community that I am part of continues to pray for our country, and that the Lord will keep our hearts and minds upon Christ in trust and hope and peace based upon the grace and promises and love of Christ.

Я постійно молюся за Україну. І я також прошу вас, щоб разом з усіма вашими молитвами за вашу країну, ви також молилися за нас і нашу країну, оскільки, здається, уряд США починає розвалюватися, а хаос, плутанина, політичне насильство та вбивства, а також розміщення федеральних військ в дедалі більшій кількості міст, зараз збільшуються. Це важкий час для багатьох тут, і міжнародна церковна спільнота, частиною якої я є, продовжує молитися за нашу країну, щоб Господь зберіг наші серця і розуми на Христі у довірі, надії та мирі, заснованому на благодаті, обіцянках і любові Христа.

So please let me know how you were doing and how the Christian community in Ukraine is managing. I pray for all of the Ukrainian people and the nation as a whole and I pray that the Lord will put an end to the evil that is constantly raining down upon you.

Тож, будь ласка, дайте мені знати, як ви поживаєте і як християнська спільнота в Україні справляється. Я молюся за всіх українців та за країну в цілому, і молюся, щоб Господь поклав край злу, яке постійно обрушується на вас.

Thank you very much for your letter. Amidst the current circumstances in our country, we are immensely glad to hear from you. Thank you for your prayers for us and for our long-suffering Ukraine.

 Дуже дякую за ваш лист. У світлі поточних обставин у нашій країні ми безмежно раді почути від вас. Дякую за ваші молитви за нас і за нашу багатостраждальну Україну.

Yes, Natalia and I are in Kyiv. We continue to serve at Grace Bible Church and Grace Bible Seminary. We thank the Lord for His protection and preservation of our family, church, and ministry together with our brothers and sisters. It is not easy or simple for us, but we are holding on.

 Так, Наталія та я в Києві. Ми продовжуємо служити в Церкві Благодатної Біблії та Семінарії Благодатної Біблії. Ми дякуємо Господу за Його захист і збереження нашої родини, церкви та служіння разом з нашими братами і сестрами. Це нелегко і не просто для нас, але ми тримаємося.

Our children, Sofia and Solomiya, are currently staying at our home in Chernihiv. Solomiya is continuing her studies at a music college. Sofia is preparing for her wedding. Over the past year, she has been friends with a young Christian brother named Ilya. He proposed to her two months ago. Their wedding is planned for a month and a half from now. Ilya lives in the west of our country. He serves as a youth leader in his local church. His grandfather is the pastor of the church and his father is a deacon. Ilya is also currently studying at our seminary. So, our family has some wonderful news to share.

Наші діти, Софія та Соломія, зараз перебувають у нашому домі в Чернігові. Соломія продовжує навчання в музичному коледжі. Софія готується до свого весілля. Протягом минулого року вона дружила з молодим християнським братом на ім’я Ілля. Він зробив їй пропозицію два місяці тому. Їхнє весілля заплановане на півтора місяця відтепер. Ілля живе на заході нашої країни. Він є лідером молоді у своїй місцевій церкві. Його дідусь є пастором церкви, а батько – дияконом. Ілля також зараз навчається у нашій семінарії. Отже, у нашій родині є чудові новини, якими можна поділитися.

As I mentioned earlier, Alena and I are currently in France receiving treatment. Thank God, on 15 September the urologist removed the cancer diagnosis and prescribed medication for me. I thank God and you for your prayers! We are staying with friends in Carcassonne, a small town in southern France.

Як я вже згадував раніше, Алена і я зараз у Франції, отримуючи лікування. Слава Богу, 15 вересня уролог зняв діагноз раку і призначив мені медикаменти. Я дякую Богу і вам за ваші молитви! Ми зупинилися у друзів у Каркасоні, маленькому місті на півдні Франції.

Concerning Alexei. 

Щодо Олексія.

We prayed that the Lord would give Alexei the opportunity to travel legally to see his sisters in Germany. Miraculously, the Lord sent an answer. Our parliament voted in favour of a law to release young men under the age of 22. Today, Alexei is in Berlin with his sister. This is his first trip outside Ukraine, so he has lots of new experiences. Chris, I know how much you prayed for Alexei. God is good and hears our prayers!

Ми молилися, щоб Господь дав Олексію можливість легально поїхати, щоб побачити своїх сестер у Німеччині. Дивом, Господь дав відповідь. Наш парламент проголосував за закон, щоб звільнити молодих людей молодше 22 років. Сьогодні Олексій у Берліні зі своєю сестрою. Це його перша подорож за межі України, тому у нього багато нових вражень. Кріс, я знаю, як сильно ти молився за Олексія. Бог добрий і чує наші молитви!

Although we are safe here, our hearts ache for Ukraine. We understand that only the Lord can direct the hearts of those in power towards peace.

Хоча ми тут у безпеці, наші серця болять за Україну. Ми розуміємо, що тільки Господь може направити серця тих, хто при владі, до миру.

A great photo. Maxim looks very healthy, and he and Alena look happy and relaxed. What a wonder that a few weeks away from the apprehension and fear of being blown to pieces or buried in the rubble of your own apartment can do for the spirit and soul of friends. A blessing and a mercy from the Lord that I pray for all Ukrainians and the nation as a whole with an end to this deadly war.

Чудове фото. Максим виглядає дуже здоровим, а він і Алена виглядають щасливими та розслабленими. Яка дивина, що кілька тижнів без страху та тривоги бути розірваним на шматки або похованим під уламками своєї квартири можуть зробити для духу та душі друзів. Це благословення і милість від Господа, за яку я молюся за всіх українців і за всю націю в цілому, щоб покласти кінець цій смертоносній війні.

When I think of what I write about Ukraine and my friends, their families, and their homes, as I live comfortably and in peace in the La-La Land of Los Angeles, it’s not that it feels surreal, for both their existence in Ukraine and my existence here are real, but for me, it deepens the connection, internally and spiritually, between us, for that is what a pursuit of knowledge and compassion working together is able to produce within us.

Коли я думаю про те, про що пишу про Україну та моїх друзів, їхні родини та їхні домівки, поки я живу комфортно і в мирі в Лос-Анджелесі, це не здається сюрреалістичним, адже і їхнє існування в Україні, і моє існування тут є реальними, але для мене це поглиблює зв’язок, внутрішньо та духовно, між нами, адже саме це є результатом спільних зусиль у пошуках знань і співчуття.

Maxim and Alena, and Igor and Natalia, are my friends, close friends, but they are also “my neighbors” giving me not just an emotional attachment, but a much deeper connection, and one blessed and mandated by the Lord, which I believe motivates and sustains my deep concerns and the depth of my prayers for them and the situation in Ukraine, which in turn deepens my trust, faith, and confidence in the Lord, with the settled knowledge that our faithful God hears and answers my prayers.

Максим та Олена, а Ігор та Наталія, – мої друзі, близькі друзі, але вони також є “моїми сусідами”, які надають мені не тільки емоційний зв’язок, але й набагато глибший зв’язок, благословенний і повелений Господом, що, як я вважаю, мотивує і підтримує мої глибокі турботи та глибину моїх молитв за них і ситуацію в Україні, що в свою чергу поглиблює мою довіру, віру та впевненість у Господі, з усталеним знанням, що наш вірний Бог чує і відповідає на мої молитви.

And this, at least for me, produces a deepening commitment and even joy in fulfilling the two great commandments of loving God with every part of my being and loving my neighbor as myself and regarding their troubles and issues of life as my own. God is not responsible nor in support of this terrible war and the evil upon Ukraine, but He has promised to hear our voices and prayers. And my prayers are for the good of my friends and Ukraine, and an end to this evil and the reign of destruction and death that is poured upon Ukraine by evil, godless men.

І це, принаймні для мене, викликає глибше зобов’язання і навіть радість у виконанні двох великих заповідей: любити Бога всією своєю сутністю і любити ближнього свого, як самого себе, ставлячи їхні тривоги та проблеми життя як свої власні. Бог не відповідає і не підтримує цю жахливу війну та зло в Україні, але Він обіцяв почути наші голоси і молитви. І мої молитви за добро моїх друзів та України, і за кінець цього зла та влади руйнування і смерті, що насипано на Україну злими, безбожними людьми.

It is a blessing how God works everything together for good within the lives, hearts, and souls of those who love Him, to mature, equip, and strengthen them to withstand and resist with intelligence, intent, and power, the lies, evil, and violence that increasingly swirl around us and our communities and neighbors – wherever they reside.

Це благословення, як Бог працює над усім на благо в житті, серцях і душах тих, хто любить Його, щоб зрости, підготувати та зміцнити їх, аби вони могли витримати й чинити опір з розумом, наміром та силою, брехні, злу та насильству, які дедалі більше оточують нас і наші громади та сусідів – де б вони не жили.
